  Tools for the Paperless Office
I think that I shall never see
a billboard lovely as a tree.
Perhaps, unless the billboards fall,
I'll never see a tree at all.

Ogden Nash, US humorist & poet (1902 - 1971)

Nothing can ever equal the awe inspiring sight of an old growth forest.
Unfortunately there's not much left because of the rapacious demand for
forestry products, much of which is used for paper products, such as the
computer paper we use every day. Although there's been a tremendous
effort on the part of all involved in the production and manufacturing to
conserve, we the consumer, can do much more in conserving how we
use paper products in our businesses.

We can begin by using as much recycled paper as we can for the printing
of the voluminous reports we all seem to generate. We can also think of
how to use newer technologies to reduce the demand for paper, some
of which are featured here.

(REPORT) What to look for when buying a GPS

If there was ever a time to renew interest in the Paperless Office concept, it is now! According to the latest studies, there are almost one billion people on the internet each day.

Google, Yahoo and a host of other sites receive more than 100 million visits per day. Most of these users are printing out a horrendous amount maps and search results, eventually winding up in the trash can. The amount of paper waste is mind boggling to say the least.

Though we can rely on managed forests as a source for paper and increase our use of recycled paper, still the resulting "carbon footprint" expended to produce what we need, has a measurable effect on our earth's resources.

GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) devices can do much in reducing the impact on our forestry resources, and GPS devices can efficiently provide more relevant mapping information than any printed map. Features such as text-to-speech can even talk you through your final destination and another handy feature is optimal routing that can re-route your trip to overcome traffic jams and other impediments.

Plastic Logic's reference to their latest innovation as an electronic reader is a modest statement indeed. The Plastic Logic electronic reader truly mimics the ubiquitous yellow paper tablet in size and weight, which is unlike like current crop of LCD based PC Tablets that are fragile and cumbersome. This awesome development by Plastic Logic definitely ushers in the age of Interactive Digital Paper.

Weighing less than 360 grams the device is nothing short of amazing considering the product has the potential to accomplish much of the tasks performed by today's PC Tablets. Just about any business document can be read on its large 81/2 x 11 inch screen. Documents such as books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, word, excel and pdf can be viewed annotated and updated. Although the product screen displays only in grayscale, color development is in progress. Pricing has yet to be established but undoubtedly that will be announced as the company closes in on its anticipated release about mid 2009.
